SIMTwin
The simulation bringing the future to airspace planning.

What is SIMTwin?

SIMTwin is an augmented reality collaborative space where architects and city planners can work directly with aerospace manufacturers, drone delivery and emerging urban air mobility operators to shape future scheme designs. Collaborative design can accelerate the approvals process by engaging local and national planning statutory consultees on safeguarding and environmental impacts, with automatic rules checks to ensure proposals are realistic and achievable at the earliest conceptual stage. Mission planning and training for autonomous inspections, patrols and surveys at airports and other key infrastructure can be rehearsed without risk. By using massive multiplayer online gaming technology, high fidelity user experiences can help people see and believe the future.

Collaboration works when everyone’s certain that their trade secrets and commercial interests are protected, but it is often difficult to let go of knowledge in case it reveals too much to your competitor. SIMTwin protects your information and allows assured business model prototyping using trusted professionals engaged on the platform to give unbiased and authoritative opinions. Collaboration using SIMTwin can accelerate the traditional planning process, resulting in a “no surprises” fast-track to commercial operations.

“We are increasingly moving towards virtual modelling and simulators to train and prepare for the safe introduction of any kind of new technology or process.  We're keen to trial the SMARTER consortium's virtual reality simulation environment as we find more and more use cases for drone flights beyond surveying and patrolling.  Helping each of our stakeholders in security, Engineering, Safety training in infrastructure, airside operations, and air traffic control visualise a future way of working can unlock the huge potential to keep our airport safe and efficient."

The SIMTwin simulation and machine learning suite will allow collaborative simulation and real-life visualisation for concept development and accelerated design. SIMTwin provides a model to identify the “rules of the air” for different classes of vehicle to maintain safe separations between each other in the surrounding airspace and terrain - our know-how will move the industry beyond the BADA physics model, accounting for hover & reverse capabilities and real-world observed aircraft performance characteristics. It will facilitate development of scenarios and procedures for gracefully managing sub-system failure scenarios that could result in distress and diversion, characterise and model uncertainty within the systems and various data feeds (e.g. radar, visual spectrum and infra-red, GPS, augmented GPS, Auto-triangulated space-based ADS-B etc). It provides a plug-and-play training environment for UAV/AAM operators and pilots.
